This process is controlled not only by hormones but also by the mother&#8217;s immune system.<br>Two important factors play a role: <\/p><ul><li><strong>HLA-C:<\/strong> A characteristic on the cells of the embryo that is inherited from the mother and father. Important: Each embryo has its own unique combination, even if the parents remain the same. <\/li><li><strong>KIR receptors:<\/strong> Recognition features on certain immune cells in the uterine lining (so-called uNK cells = &#8220;uterine natural killer cells&#8221;). They are the embryo&#8217;s &#8220;bodyguards.&#8221; <\/li><\/ul><p>If the HLA-C signature of the embryo and the KIR status of the mother match, the embryo can implant better.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b4cf94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3b4cf94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>Why do embryos from the same parents differ?<\/strong><\/h3><p>Even if the mother and father remain the same, each child inherits a different mix of their genes. This means: <\/p><ul><li>An embryo can have a harmonious combination of HLA-C and maternal KIR.<\/li><li>The next embryo may have a less favorable combination.<\/li><\/ul><p>If a cycle does not result in pregnancy, it is usually due to genetic factors (meiosis and mitosis errors). However, it can also happen that for the immunological reasons mentioned above, some cycles (even with artificial insemination) do not lead to pregnancy. This is <strong>not<\/strong> because &#8220;something is fundamentally wrong&#8221; \u2013 but because of the <strong>random combination of genes<\/strong>, which varies with each embryo.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d74c682 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d74c682\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>Which combinations are considered less favorable?<\/strong><\/h3><p>In rare cases, there is a <strong>stronger inhibition<\/strong> of implantation.<br>This primarily affects women with a specific KIR type (&#8220;KIR-AA&#8221;) without (always the case, as genetically determined) activating killer cell receptors, who carry embryos that have inherited a specific HLA-C type from the father (&#8220;C1&#8221;, not always, varies from embryo to embryo). This combination can cause the uterine lining to prevent or hinder implantation and then inhibit placental development too much, which can lead to miscarriages or pregnancy complications (so-called gestoses) during pregnancy. <\/p><p>Importantly, this combination is <strong>not an absolute exclusion<\/strong> for a pregnancy \u2013 many women with this combination become pregnant without any complications, as many other factors play a role in how well an embryo implants (embryo viability).<\/p><p>Determining the KIR genes can be useful in the following cases:<\/p><ul><li>Repeated early miscarriages<\/li><li>Lack of implantation despite good embryos (IVF\/ICSI)<\/li><li>Evidence of placentation problems in previous pregnancies<\/li><\/ul><p>KIR typing (blood test) is more important than HLA-C typing.<\/p><p>In the situations mentioned above, understanding the immunological constellations helps to narrow down possible causes and adjust further treatment accordingly, e.g., by administering special medications containing growth factors that are insufficiently produced by the killer cells when activation is inadequate (G-CSF).
